ABOUT
Meet Katie
I have taught piano for nearly twenty years, but have spent a lifetime cultivating my love for this instrument. I began taking lessons with a family friend when I was six years old. No matter how frustrated I got with the challenges of making ten fingers do ten different things, I always came back for the good stuff. When I was nine my true loves were “Fur Elise” and “My Heart Will Go On” and eventually I developed a passion for classical music.
After graduating from Western Washington University, I taught piano at two music schools while enjoying an active career collaborating with local musicians. I was the pianist for Whatcom Symphony Orchestra and for a community opera company. I played a church and accompanied many music students of all ages, including a weekly voice masterclass.
Life was busy, and in my mid twenties I developed persistent pain in my hands and neck. At the suggestion of my piano teacher at the time, I attended a Feldenkrais Class at the local YMCA. I was immediately drawn to the subtle yet complex movements and the student-centered teaching style. I quickly came to see that the Feldenkrais Method® was not just as a way to heal from injury, but a way to further develop my skills as a teacher.
In 2021 I became a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner®. I am also a Certified Oxygen Advantage Advanced Breathing Instructor and Nationally Certified Teacher of Music. I received a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at Western Washington University. Click here to read my full C.V.
WHAT I DO
Piano Lessons In My Studio
Deciding to take piano lessons is an important step in your musical journey. You’ve made it this far, and I can’t wait to see where it takes you.
My studio is the place to merge mind, body, spirit, and sound in order to play piano with elegance and ease. I first cultivate artistic creativity and intuition, and we build music literacy from there.
My approach pulls from the work of Dorothy Taubman, my training as a Feldenkrais Practitioner®, and my many years of education in the classical music tradition. All of my teaching is rooted in the belief that music is an essential part of humanity.
The individuals that find my work most meaningful are drawn to the piano and come to me seeking to overcome the challenge of playing piano. Some students are experienced players, and others are complete beginners. They have a wide range of musical interests, from Beyoncé to Beethoven. Over half of my students are adults! No matter what pieces you feel like playing or what background you come from, I will support you as you learn piano.
