Six Rhythmic Breathing Etudes
I composed and developed the Six Rhythmic Breathing Etudes as a project for the final year of my Feldenkrais® training. (Click here to read more about my journey.)
The Six Rhythmic Breathing Etudes are an exploration of the rhythm and pace of breath in playing. These pieces include an introduction with instructions, a copy of the score with suggested breathing patterns, questions for reflection, and a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® lesson on rhythmic breathing. The learning intention is to expand awareness of the breath during playing. It is often difficult to attend the many details of the music as well as our breath, and this process aims to bridge that gap, reuniting the mind and body for optimal performance.
Breath awareness is a powerful tool for centering as well as finding ease and expressivity in playing. In a study on pianist’s breath patterns, the researchers discovered that each pianist had a unique approach to breathing and that their approach was influenced by the musical selection. Through exploration of breathing at the piano, pianists work towards maximizing their potential and expanding awareness as well as musicianship!
